課程概述

The foundation of success in English conversations and presentations is making it easy for other people to listen to and understand your spoken English. In Oral Aural Training in English students learn the limited number of rules which they need to raise the quality of their spoken English. With consistent and diligent practice, students can apply these rules and easily improve their pronunciation and intonation in English. In-class practice with feedback from classmates and the teacher help students understand their strengths and weaknesses in spoken English so they can take responsibility for their own improvement.

The foundation of success in participating in English conversations and professional presentations lies in developing well-rounded skills in listening. In Oral Aural Training in English students practice discriminating listening skills in English, including trouble spots like numbers, confused words and cultural background vocabulary. Students also get practice developing mental stamina in listening, predicting skills and the ability to relate what they hear to what has gone before in the conversation or listening sample.

課程目標
Our objectives in Oral Aural Training in English are:

(1) to make it easier for others to listen to your spoken English by improving your pronunciation, intonation and delivery of ideas.

(2) to expand English listening skills for tests and lectures as well as listening in real-life situations (conversations)

課程要求
There is no required textbook in this course. However, students are required to focus on the English corrections they hear in any of their English language skills classes by keeping a "Pronunciation and Grammar Journal". This is a computer document in which they keep a daily listing of all the English pronunciation and grammar corrections they hear in any of their classes at the university.

Each week there will be a listening assignment and a pronunciation practice for students to do. If students work diligently in doing these assignments, they will see improvement in their performance. Assignments will be posted on CEIBA: students MUST be able to download and print out the answer sheet for each assignment.

Students need to attend class in order to improve their spoken English and listening skills. So, it only makes sense to attend every class. To encourage this practice, this course will strictly follow the university attendance policy. If you must miss a class, be sure to print out the student absence document and give it to the teacher within the time limit. (Explanation: The computer-based absence notification system used by the university does not include your English name, so it is difficult for the teacher to use it. Only hard copies (paper copies) of the absence document will be accepted. A copy of the form is available on the announcements page of this class webpage.)

Our syllabus is designed to promote student performance in speaking and listening in English. It is very important that all students keep up with the assignments. All assignments must be handed in on time; late assignments will not be accepted. If you find you are having a problem completing your assignment on time, contact the teacher as soon as possible to make arrangements for submitting an assignment late. Contact the teacher at class email address given on the course syllabus in class.

參考書目
Typical class format: The first hour of class will usually be focused on pronunciation and intonation; the second hour will usually be focused on listening. Each week the homework assignment is to use the "Echo Method" to improve your pronunciation and intonation by practicing a limerick, poem or reading. (This will require approximately 15 minutes of practice several times a week.) Several students will be called on in class to perform the assignment for the class. Feedback from the teacher and students will be given, leading to a focused discussion of pronunciation and intonation. All students need to take notes on this feedback and discussion for their journals as well as apply the information to their own spoken English. (Students are tested on this information!)

The second hour of class will focus on listening in English, starting with correction of the prior week's listening homework and a discussion of the content. Throughout this correction and discussion, students are expected to use correct English pronunciation and intonation. Students should take notes on the information given in class as well as the pronunciation and intonation corrections.

We will focus on standard American English in this class.
